March 20, 2006 Hi Richard, I left town last Friday to spend 3 days in the mountains on the eastern side of the state where there is some dirt and rock showing instead of snow. Went hiking and exploring but also got quite a bit of shooting in with a few guns. I brought your Hi-Power with me but before I left Jackson Hole I took your advice and installed the new Bomar you sent me instead of trying to fix the old sight and correct its tilted problem. You certainly didn't have to send the new sight as it wasn't your fault the old one was funky and I had specified the Bomar anyway, not you. It was the right call though. In the three days I put about 500+ deliberate and observed rounds through the Hi-Power in all kinds of conditions and terrain. Range varied from 5 yards out to about 100 and then some. The new Bomar sight completely cured the sight issues and I feel now there could not be a better set up for what I want to use a gun for. Something larger than a .22 but not as large as a 1911 for field use and shooting birds in the head during the Fall. There are too many wolves and mountain lions out there to just carry a .22 anymore. With the Hi-Power I can easily hit marble size targets from 5 up to almost 15 yards and about grapefruit size out to about 100 if wanted. I don't think anything much would have been gained with a special barrel. Not for my ability anyway. Your smooth barrel recrown was all that was needed. I have to say again the sights are just perfect. Now there is no pulling the gun up and then having to pause to figure out what you want to do, just pull up and the picture matches everything else you've shot ever shot, nice and square with right angles. The sight you put in the front is the perfect height, not too tall or low and with the Bomar screwed down almost all the way I don't have to deal with the blade sitting high because a front sight is too low. I have things adjusted the way I want and don't have the rear sight sticking up in the air or so much front sight that the gun doesn't fit my holsters. It's the exact way I like an adjustable sight pistol. You nailed these heights perfect and couldn't have done better. There were no problems during the 500+ rounds. I oiled it when needed and cleaned the crud build up off the breech face a couple of times. Trigger smoothed out with all the shooting. I'm totally happy with this gun and wouldn't have wanted anything less or anything more done. It has exactly what I hoped for as far as balance of capabilities in an all-arounder. It's fast on target, reliable and has the picture I wanted for accurate work fairly close which is the main duty but I also did some fast combat style shooting and it works fine there also. Any internal changes I might want made I can easily do when I detail strip the pistol after a substantial amount of shooting has been done. I really admire the exterior finish detail and quality you did on this gun and it exceeds any of my blued guns. Now that I have your gun in hand I'm going to sell the C&S and Novak Hi-Powers I bought from other shooters that had them made. I think they wanted and needed something more like the one made for me but instead ended up more of a combat style instead of all-arounder style. Should be able to buy a load of ammo with the proceeds. Sorry for rambling a bit but just wanted to let you know that I've shot this gun fast, slow, near, far, light, dark, rain, snow, dirty, clean. The Fletcher Custom Pistols Hi-Power and I are good to go. Thanks again for the great job. D.W. - Wyoming |
